License & Updates

Updated Oct 17, 2026

Overview

Matterly asks for your Envato purchase code once, the first time the Super Admin opens /super. After that, new versions install with one click from Super Admin → License & Updates (/super/license).

Only the Super Admin area needs a license. Firm admins, staff, the client portal, public firm websites and booking keep working whatever the license state, so your firms are never locked out.

Activating your license

  1. Sign in as the Super Admin and open /super.
  2. You are taken to the License page (/license).
  3. Enter your Envato purchase code and a contact email, then click Activate.

The code is verified with Envato and tied to your domain. After that the license is checked offline on every request, with a quiet daily background check. If the license server can't be reached, everything keeps working on the stored license for up to 30 days.

The contact email is used only for license and update notices about Matterly. Envato doesn't share buyer emails with authors, so this is the only way we can reach you.

Finding your purchase code: on your CodeCanyon Downloads page, click Download → License certificate & purchase code next to Matterly. It looks like xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx.

Local and staging sites

A Regular License covers one production domain. These don't use it up (up to 3 per license):

  • localhost, 127.0.0.1 and private network addresses
  • domains ending in .test, .local or .localhost
  • a staging subdomain of your licensed domain, e.g. staging.yourdomain.com once yourdomain.com is activated

Firm subdomains and custom domains don't need activating: the license belongs to the main platform domain where the Super Admin works.

Moving to another domain

On the old site open /license, expand Move this license to another domain, enter your purchase code and click Release this domain. Then activate on the new site. If the old site is already gone, contact support with your purchase code.

One-click updates

When a new version is out, the Super Admin area shows "Matterly X is available — Update now". Matterly checks once a day; click Check for updates on the License & Updates page to check right away. Click Update, read what's new, and confirm. It usually takes under a minute:

  1. The update is downloaded (only activated installs can download it) and its digital signature is checked. Anything not signed by us is refused.
  2. Every file that will change is backed up to storage/app/licentra-update/.
  3. The site goes into maintenance mode for a few seconds, only changed files are replaced, and files a release no longer needs are removed.
  4. Database migrations run, caches are cleared, and the site comes back.

If anything fails, the previous files are put back automatically and the site comes back up.

Never touched by an update: your .env, storage/ (uploads, Smart Form files, logs) and public/.htaccess. Translations you edited under Super Admin → Translations are kept; new strings from the update are added alongside them.

Take a database backup from your hosting panel before updating.

From the command line instead:

php artisan licentra:update

If the update page says a file can't be written, the web server user can't modify Matterly's files: fix the ownership (e.g. chown -R www-data:www-data /path/to/matterly) or upload the new version manually.

Updates are free for the life of your license — you don't need active support to update.

Add-on modules are updated separately, from Super Admin → Modules. A Matterly update never changes them or their data. The Modules card on this page shows how many are installed, running or need attention. See Add-on Modules.
